It features the line-up of Gerald Brown, and, and was the only Shalamar album on which Brown appeared. Disco Gardens was less successful than Shalamar's debut Uptown Festival, peaking at #52 on the and #171 on the. It contains early indications of what was to become the distinctive 'SOLAR sound', most notably on the single release 'Take That to the Bank' which was a UK Top 20 hit in early 1979.

They employed an unusual technique using multiple layers of instruments such as the clavinet, electric pianos, and & in place of the used in production techniques. The popular appeal of the recording helped destroy the myth that artists were incapable of creating music that could be appreciated by rock audiences, and marked a unique period for R&B artists (especially artists). Incidentally, at the same ceremony, Wonder's next album, won and Talking Book's associate producers and won the award for their work on that album.
